Making Odd Noises

Most people know that if their vehicle is making odd noises when shifting gears, it's likely that there is a problem with the car's transmission. But, did you know that your car could have transmission problems if you hear odd noises while your car is in neutral? If you hear the occasional bump or thud while your car is in neutral, chances are, your transmission fluid needs to be refilled or replaced. However, if you hear a lot of noise or several noises while your car is in neutral, your transmission could be having mechanical issues, such as worn bearings, gear teeth, or reverse idler gear. 

Also, if you drive a car with a manual transmission, hearing a clunking sound from underneath your vehicle could indicate that you have transmission problems. Cars with automatic transmissions make more subtle sounds when they have transmission problems -- typically, a humming, whining, or buzzing sound.

Shaking or Grinding When Shifting Gears

If your transmission's gear synchronizers are worn or damaged, it will cause your car to shake or grind when shifting gears. If you have a manual transmission, you'll be able to hear or feel a grinding sound as you take your car through each gear. However, if your car has an automatic transmission, you're more likely to feel a short jerk when the car switches gears.

Lack of Response

When your car shifts gears, the transmission automatically goes into the correct gear -- that's how it's designed. So, if your car refuses to shift into gear it's a clear sign that you have a problem with your transmission. If your car isn't responding to gear changes, the engine revs up as the car shifts gears, but the car itself has difficulty moving faster. If you're driving a car with an automatic transmission, you might also notice the engine revving up while you're stopped or have the car in park.
